The Red Lip Series: Cherries in the Snow

“A truly elegant taste is generally accompanied with excellency of heart….”

Today’s post is on Revlon’s Cherries in the Snow. It’s a lipstick with
a lot of history behind it. You can see my video on Timeless & Classic
Beauty Products here. I talk a little bit about the rich history
behind it.

I recently wore it for the first time and I have to tell you, it’s not
what I expected the color to be however, I *really* liked it. It’s a
deep pink/ red that almost comes off fuchsia on the lips.I think it’s
a great color to rock in the Fall season. I paired it with a very
neutral mid tone brown eye–it’s a FAB combo. I may be doing a tutorial
on this look soon…

On a side note, I’m really into updos-it’s quick and easy plus I don’t have to worry about meticulously curl every strand of my very long hair-haha! I guess you can call this a simple low chignon? Whatever you call it, it feel super elegant and I loved it.

Overall, I really like the lipstick, it had great staying power for
being a “drugstore” lipstick. I’ve got to tell you, I’ve REALLY been
into Revlon lately…I’m loving it as much as I adore MAC–it’s a
great thing–especially for my wallet. :D

The Red Lips Series: MAC Runaway Red Dupe?

While at the drugstore today, I set out to find a dupe for my HG red lippy, Runaway Red by MAC. SO many of you have told me that Runaway Red is sold out in store and online and have asked me to find a dupe for this fabulous color.

I found something CLOSE but honestly, Runaway Red is so unique of a color, it’s been impossible to find it’s virtual twin. After lots swatching, I found something worth blogging about: Maybelline Color Sensational Lipstick in Everlasting (345).

Runaway Red is a deep red but takes on a bit of a berry appearance when swatched next to other red lipsticks. Maybelline’s Everlasting took on that same deep berry red shade but this lipstick has some shimmer to it where as Runaway Red is a satin with no shimmer.

Here are the swatches:

Left: Maybelline Everlasting            Right: Runaway Red

Top: Runaway Red        Bottom: Everlasting

Final Thoughts: As I’ve stated, they’re not exactly the same but they are pretty close. If you missed out on MAC’s Runaway Red (which a lot of my YouTube subbies say is sold out everywhere), then Maybelline’s Color Sensational lipstick in Everlasting may be a nice alternative.

The Red Lip Series: CHANEL Rouge Coco in Gabrielle

*sigh* I REALLY wanted to love this lipstick. I paid about $35 for it so as I said, I REALLY WANTED TO LOVE THIS LIPSTICK. It doesn’t work for me. Out of all my red lippy’s, this is the ONLY ONE that doesn’t work for me. I was hoping this lipstick would be a bit deeper than MAC’s Russian Red. I swatched this at the Chanel counter and I loved it but putting it on my lips… it looked so much different.  Gabrielle is a blue based red but it’s a bit brighter than I would have  hoped. I literally only used it once and I immediately put it on my blog sale page. I think this is a beautiful color but just not the color I wanted it to be. Bummer.

The Red Lip Series: Revlon Wine Not Matte Lipstick

Today’s red lip post is on Revlon’s Wine Not lipstick. This is a true matte lipstick which I find can be very drying on the lips. I had exfoliated before applying this lipstick and it still looks horrible after I applied.

This lipstick is acquired taste for sure. To me, it’s very “silent-film-esque” –a very deep brown/ red color. It’s super intense and kinda takes on a “gothic” feel on my NW20 skin tone. I remember being quite fond of this color last year but swatching it and trying it on for today’s blog post–I’m sot so sure about it now. I think it would look better on a darker skin tone for sure!

I thought it’d be funny to include this photo of me wearing Revlon’s Wine Not lipstick in black & white–see?! It’s very Silent Film-esque! Now all I need is a short bob hair cut & a finger wave! *lol* xoxo

The Red Lip Series

“You can’t keep changing men, so you settle for changing your lipstick.”
-Heather Locklear

Because I’m so obsessed with red lips at the moment, I thought it’d be
fun to do a little series of blog posts on my red lipstick/ lip gloss
collection. This is just an intro to the series as well as some tips and advice I have if you’re a bit nervous to get into red lipstick.

In the past I’ve purchased red lipsticks, a few years ago
I bought Target Red from L’Oreal (I think). I thought it was a
beautiful color but at that point, I wasn’t ready or comfortable for
red lipstick. I hear a lot of people say that they’re afraid of such a
bold color–I was there too. There are SO many different types of red
lip products–glosses, lipsticks, balms and to add to the confusion,
there are so many different finishes out there–satin, matte, glossy,
lustre–it can get overwhelming.

Some Tips…

The one thing I always tell people when they want to experiement with
a red lip product is to always TEST it out in the comfort  of your own
home.  This is something I didn’t do. I remember putting on my Target
Red and leaving the house. This may sound odd but as I was walking
around in the store, I felt somewhat paranoid-I felt like people where
starting at me (which I’m sure I caught a few ppl’s attn because you
don’t see people rocking bright red lips everyday). I remember feeling
so uncomfortable that I went home and threw the lipstick out. I just
wrote it off as a color that “didn’t look right on me”.

My point is,if you don’t experiment with a product (especially bold colored beauty
products), you can be writing off a perfectly awesome item! What I
like to do is set some time aside to swatch the product AND TRY IT ON
MY LIPS. I stress that because a lot of people think a swatch can tell
the whole story about a product, I strongly disagree. I think it’s
best to see what colors are complimentary & what hairstyles look
flattering/ what colors are flattering with the color. It may sound a
bit much to you, but this is what works for me.

So don’t be afraid of the red lip! Try it out, get comfortable with it and…

…fearlessly rock it!! xo

MAC Runaway Red, I Love You.

“Beauty, to me, is about being comfortable in your own skin. That, or a kick-ass red lipstick.”

-Gwyneth Paltrow

I’ve been using Instagram a lot lately–it’s kinda my new thing. You’ll see a lot more pictures with cool effects like the ones below.

Yesterday’s weather was VERY dreary. While I usually love weather like that, there’s one thing I can’t stand and that’s the humidity in the air–blah! It was horrid yesterday. When it’s muggy out, it’s impossible to find an outfit & hairstyle that’s going to work. I went simple–black plaid shirt (very Zacky V-*lol*), dark skinnies, knee high boots and a side swept bun. I thought this outfit was cute & casual but was lacking–so I paired it with a skinny belt. All would have been perfect if the hardware on the belt was silver, not gold. It drove me semi crazy because of the silver lining in my shirt.

For makeup, I went with a quick, effortless makeup, my version of Old Hollywood: Neutral Smoked Out Eye & a Bold Red Lip. I know the gals of yesteryear weren’t sporting smokey eyes back then but I like to add my own spin on things. For me, it’s hard to do “inspired” looks, I like to rock what works for me, my skin tone and eye shape.

These are the products I used (notice the vintage-esque filter a la Instagram?)

-UDPP
-MAC Bare Study
-Cover Girl Champagne (on lid & high light for the face)
-MAC Wedge
-MAC Coquette (ONE OF MY FAVE EYE SHADOWS-EVER!)
-MAC Carbon
-NYX Jumbo Pencil in Black Bean
-Cover Girl Lash Blast Mascara (…and TONS of it!)

…and the star of the show….

…MAC Runaway Red. Love.

My gorgeous friend, Irene sent this lippy to me–I’m internally grateful. I’ve never been THIS excited about a lipstick (although Revlon Fire & Ice comes in at a close second!). Runaway Red is a medium blue based red that’s super dark. I think this shade would look flattering on most skintones. It doesn’t bleed, no mess on my teeth–I put it on and it stays put! I absolutely love the matte finish.

Hope you’re all having a fabulous Saturday night!! xo
